Good Afternoon, Madison Families.
A recent incident involving a High School student has prompted me to send a reminder to parents of the importance of monitoring their student’s online activity and presence. As a district, we want to make sure that the “if you see something, say something” message applies to what our students may come across on social media.
Earlier today, a high school student notified our administration and school resource officer that an unknown SnapChat user added them as a friend last night. Throughout yesterday evening, and today, he made multiple attempts to schedule a “meet-up” with this student. In conjunction with the student’s guardian, our administrative team, school resource officer, and local law enforcement worked diligently to ensure the students safety.
As a district, we want to reinforce our efforts in informing our students of the risks associated with social media. This is just one example of the danger that students can unknowingly put themselves in when using the public venue of the internet, specifically social media. We will continue to do our part to monitor behavior here at school and to educate students about safe and appropriate interactions. We ask that you please reinforce this important message by speaking with your children and by monitoring their online interactions at home. Lastly, please encourage them to report anything they see that may be of concern.
Sincerely,
Nick Steinmetz
Superintendent
